ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:
The 27th Surveying and Geospatial Information Conference will be held in its birthplace on 9/4~9/5, 2008. Its establishing unit, The Department of Geomatics National Cheng Kung University, is set to enter its 30th year and the 30th alumni reunion will be held at the same time. The Surveying and Geospatial Information Conference is an annual event for industry, government and academia. Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering Chung Cheng Institute of Technology, National Defense University, Center for Space and Remote Sensing Research, National Central University, Department of Civil Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, Department of Civil Engineering, National Chung Hsing University, Department of Land Economics, National Cheng-chi University, Department of Civil Engineering, National Ilan University, Department of Civil Engineering, Chienkuo Technology University, Ching Yun University, and this department have sponsored the conference alternately for over 20 years in succession, allowing the conference to become the most important stage for academic paper presentation and applied technology exchange relating to the field of surveying and geospatial information.
The topic of this year‘s seminar is “Sensing the World: A New Generation of Geospatial Information Sensing Technologies and Applications.” This topic echoes the developments and changes in measurement science and technology. Measurement technology has evolved from traditional optical observations into geospatial information capture using electronic sensors and automated processing techniques. For example, GPS receiver senses satellite signals to get geo-coordinates, replacing the traditional triangulation technique. Digital imaging sensing and automatic digital photogrammetry greatly reduces the demand for three-dimensional observations. Airborne LiDAR combines direct georeferencing and laser scanning systems and directly senses the ground point of three dimensional coordinates. With the progress of sensing technologies, the workload in the measurement field work has declined. Measurement technology has transformed into geospatial information processing technology. The work form has changed into operating software systems, mainly internal work. At the same time, this progress has given surveying and geospatial information a broader area of applications, including remote sensing in combination with space technology, monitoring atmosphere and water, natural and man-made environmental changes, and various kinds of geospatial information-related applications. It is no surprise that the U.S. Department of Labor made a list that put geospatial information industry together with biotechnology and nanotechnology as the three major industries of the 21st Century.
This year’s conference will maintain the tradition of past conferences which featured both academic discussion and industrial technology exchange. The wonderful keynote session featuring four world renowned scholars will open the conference. Afterwards, beside the four simultaneously ongoing academic sessions in the conference rooms, space will be set aside for government agencies and academic research groups to exhibit their achievements in policy promoting or new technology invention and manufacturers to display their products. In order to promote exchange between government agencies and industry or discussion of surveying technology education and training, the conference will have rooms for specific topics where lectures will be presented and the topic discussed. The conference will have another conference room exclusively for students, encouraging young students to participate in the seminar. And best student papers will be selected and awarded.
