January 5, 10:30 a.m. – New Archaeological Research at Valley Forge
Recent excavations conducted by the National Park Service (1999-2002) and Temple University (2007) in the brigade encampment areas of Valley Forge have shed new light on the 1777-1778 winter camp for the Continental Army. The new research has shown that the area was alive with activity and the army was being drilled in anticipation of the spring campaigns. Not only hut sites and associated trash pits were unearthed but more singular sites such as camp kitchens, exterior fireplaces, cooking areas, smithing locations, and other work areas were also explored. The final conclusion from this work is that the army of 1777-78 appeared to be one which was not seriously suffering from imminent collapse. Presented by Dr. David Orr of the Anthropology Department at Temple University.
