[USA] Film — Screening Shakespeare

Library of Congress/Mary Pickford Theater

Welcome to Screening Shakespeare! During the next four months (April 20-August 31), as part of the citywide celebration of everything Shakespeare, the Library of Congress will present an unprecedented series of films and TV shows based or inspired by the Bard's works (for complete list of titles see Shakespeare Screenings in the Pickford Theater). From the early silent images of three men in kilts re-enacting a scene from ‘Macbeth’ to Kenneth Brannagh's sumptuous four-hour Hamlet, the program will showcase the full breath of Shakespearean screen adaptations of the past one hundred years. Included are classics with Olivier, Welles and Burton, Maurice Evans's legendary Hallmark Hall of Fame performances and other broadcasts from the golden age of live television, superb BBC adaptations, even Shakespeare-inspired animated films and sitcoms.

Many of these treasures have not been seen since their original release/broadcast, for example, the BBC's 1967 version of Much Ado About Nothing, considered lost until a video tape was unearthed in the Library's collection during preparations for this series, and The Comedy of Errors featuring The Flying Karamazov Brothers, on the most wanted list of many a video collector. Conceived as a historical overview of Shakespeare on film & TV, the series also serves as a sampler of the Library's vast moving image collection which contains a wealth of Bard-related film, video and TV materials.

Screening Shakespeare was made possible by a generous grant from the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation. The series was curated by Zoran Sinobad and Sam Serafy. Thanks to Rosemary Hanes and Christel Schmidt for their input. A special thank you to Martha Hopkins whose persistence made the series possible in its present format.

Also in April (Mondays), the return of our annual jazz series, sponsored by the Library’s Music Division and curated by Larry Appelbaum. And, not to disappoint fans of our regular (non-Shakespeare) programming, an eclectic selection of rarities and oddities will be scattered throughout the calendar.
