The progress in information technology allows cultural artifacts to be suitably preserved in digital form. The digital file building work of the National Science Council’s TELDAP is on-going and, to date, TELDAP has accumulated over 3 million cultural artifact digital files. The objective of the Digital Archives Plan is not just storing artifacts in a different form, the aim is to use IT and the Internet to encourage the wide application and sharing of the artifacts and allow this precious material to be applied on various levels in academia, education, research, society and industry.
The main content of the digital archives is geographic information relating to the spatial distribution of various natural and cultural phenomena of the earth’s surface. How to increase the application and promote the use of digitally archived geographic information are issues being addressed by scholars in various related fields. In the past two years the Application of Geographic Information symposia held by the division project office have been enthusiastically received and have helped make the application of geographic information widespread in history, anthropology, social sciences, religious studies and public hygiene, and also stimulated more research interest and participation willingness. This year’s symposium will seek to build on the success of the previous two symposia and provide a platform for exchange and sharing with respect to digital archives research, data access, humanities and social science applications and education and promotion for scholars in related fields. It will, moreover, allow further opportunities for cooperation to be discussed, making the symposium an opportunity to develop geographic information further.
