Xiaolin Village Night Ceremony

Xiaolin village in Jiaxian Rural Township, Kaohsiung County, was devastated in the typhoon Morakot on August 8. The majority of residents of the village are members of the Siraya tribe, a branch of the Pingpu tribe, and it was also the site of field work photoed by former Institute of Ethnography Digital Archives Project director Mr. Pan Ying-hai (currently director of the Graduate Institute of Anthropology of National Chi Nan University Center). The Institute of Ethnography digital archives contain over 2,000 photographs taken by Mr. Pan during the Xiaolin night ceremony from 1998 to 2000. After being arranged they have been provided to the villagers and units carrying out reconstruction for reference.
The institute said that the release of these photographs is not intended to establish a kind of cultural orthodoxy, rather it is meant to give the people of the village a chance to engage in a dialogue with the past, see how their culture once was and return the power to interpret their culture to the people of Xiaolin.
