The National Palace Museum's collection of painting and calligraphy was inherited from the holdings of the Qing dynasty imperial house. Representing fine artworks amassed by the court over the ages, the collection is extremely rich and exquisite in both quantity and quality. After cultural objects from the Palace Museum were moved with the Nationalist government to Taiwan in 1949, the collection has continued to expand. Including an active program for the purchase of painting, calligraphy, and antiquities as well as donations by many prominent figures, collectors, and institutions in society, the number of additions to the collection over the past fifty-plus years has reached about 2,500.
