In the digital era workplace where changes happy so quickly what characteristics do you need to stand out from the crowd? During the “Digital education and e-Learning Promotion Seminar” held by TELDAP’s Digital Education and e-Learning Project, Hsue Liang-kai Operating Officer, Eslite On-line Division generously shared his previous experience and this is a valuable guide for anyone wanting to be successful in the workplace in the digital era.
Mr. Hsue thinks that to be outstanding in the workplace firstly we must cast aside the feeling of self-satisfaction, keep the senses open and always be willing to accept new idea. This is the best way to take on the challenges presented by the digital area. When a “never satisfied” mindset, we should observe the things around us and try to put forward solutions to problems and nurture the ability to think deeply, broadly and flexibly. In the digital era using the Internet can help us achieve more results for much less effort and Hsue pointed out four methods for using the Internet effectively: “Search,” “Learning” & Reading,” “Job” and “Social.”
“Search” refers to using the Internet effectively to find information. Not all information on-line is correct, however, as a result of TELDAP a substantial amount of valuable reference material has been posted on the Internet. By making effective use of the Internet to find information we need we can save a lot of time.
“Learning & Reading” is on a higher plane than “search” and represents a kind of initiative taking pursuit of knowledge. Hsue thinks we can read BBC,CNN,NY Times and other authoritative global media every day and this will give access to the most up to date and advance news in every field, sometimes even one week earlier than Taiwan’s international or technology news. Even if our English ability is not so good we can make good use of the translation service provided by Google etc and this will allow us to grasp the basic situation; later we can read and research important information in more detail.
“Job” involves using free resources to make our work go more smoothly and be more efficient. We can use Google mailboxes, translation functions and maps and the Google calendar and various bookmarks can help us to maintain a grasp of our schedule and Internet resources while we move between places and PCs.
“Social” allows us to quickly spread our opinions and make them have an influence. For example, Facebook, Plurk and Twitter are not just widely publicized playthings loved by politicians and celebrities, they are also outstanding Internet socializing tools and more and more of Taiwan enterprises and organization have extended the PR and marketing “battleground” to these SNS systems. If an individual or an organization boldly declares their opinions, they make sense, and makes effective use of the Internet to spread the word to others they will be seen by many people!
Hsue ended by giving his audience these words and food for thought: “Change is the beginning of everything.”
We hope that these digital era methods can be used by everyone to make them “The Undefeatable One from the East” in the Internet society
