Following the remarkable responses received for 2010 and 2011's national treasure cultural and creative merchandise design competition, the event will be entering its 3rd year this year. The Museum will work jointly with the Taiwan Designers'Web for the first time to host the 2012 NPM's 3rd Annual National Treasure Merchandise Design Competition, which will be themed upon "The Qianlong Emperor's Taste in Ceramics Special Exhibition" that will take place next year (in 2013). For this event, the museum will select 101 of Emperor Qianlong's private collections, and explore the emperor's collections, development of aesthetic taste, and artistic manifestation. These NPM relics will serve to stimulate the designers' creativity and imagination to transform artifact collection into functional, real-world designs, and illustrate the significance of "cultural and creative development" and "added value to artifacts." The NPM will give away $120,000 to the first prize winner who will also be presented an opportunity to put his design merchandise into mass production in creating a fashionable and practical NPM cultural and creative merchandise. Design solicitation will begin from Aug. 24 to Oct. 22.
During the design solicitation period the NPM will also host aesthetics series seminars, which will be held on (Sat) Sept. 15 and (Sat) Oct. 6 in the Taiwan Designers' Plaza (the Taipei Flower Expo EXPO Doom) and the NPM Wen-hui-t'ang Auditorium. The Museum has invited famed industrial and academia professionals such as Creative Director Li Wei-Lang of the Afterain Design Studio, Professor Lin Long-Tai of the Crafts & Design Department at the National Taiwan University of Arts, and NPM artifacts experts to talk about the management of national treasure merchandise brands, artifacts aesthetics, and cultural and creative designs. Winners of the past events were also invited to share their personal competition experience. Furthermore, the Museum will kick off its nationwide series seminar tour, which will take place in Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan for a total of five events. They are: Sept. 1 (National Tainan Living Arts Center); Sept. 2 (Taichung Allo Friend Café); Sept. 24 (National Taipei University of Technology); Sept. 25 (Taitung University); Sept. 28 (National Taiwan University of Science and Technology), which will introduce the NPM's collection of classic relics and bring the public community a step closer to understanding the beauty of Chinese culture. For details and registration, please visit the event website at http://www.ntddc.info/ or log onto Facebook and search under "National Treasure Merchandise Design Competition." In addition, a periodical Q & A event will be held for the Facebook fans group where the Museum will give away mystery gifts in limited edition. The 3rd Annual National Treasure Merchandise Design Competition will include finalist awards categories gold, silver, bronze, awards of excellence, and nomination awards. On Dec. 27, the Museum will hold the awards ceremony press conference as well as an exhibition of achievements for a half-month period, inviting all winning designers to come out and celebrate.
