American Treasures Gallery Thomas Jefferson Building February 22 - August 18, 2007 Monday - Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Shakespeare's presence in the American consciousness is long-standing and pervasive. Versions of his plays have been produced by Hollywood, and theaters from New York to Washington to Ashland, Oregon, present them to a wide and varied public. Popular culture such as cartoons, television, and advertising is full of references to Shakespeare and his influence.
Reflecting America's long interest in Shakespeare, the Library of Congress collections contain a wealth of Shakespeare-related material. As part of the "Shakespeare in Washington" Festival, the Library presents this selection of items. They include mementoes of famous actors and actresses, such as notes on roles, prompt books, playbills, performance photographs, and theatrical posters; costume designs from the 1930s Federal Theater Project; political cartoons from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and manuscripts of classical and popular music related to Shakespeare's plays.

Since 1907, the MacDowell Colony has offered a creative sanctuary to visual artists, writers, and composers. Founded by American composer Edward MacDowell and his wife Marian, the Colony’s underlying philosophy is that artists working in different disciplines can benefit from contact with one another. This agenda along with the promise of quiet, solitude, and time and freedom to create has attracted hundreds of artists to the Colony over the years. The Colony counts among its alumni some of the most distinguished names in American arts and letters, including Milton Avery, James Baldwin, Leonard Bernstein, Willa Cather, Aaron Copland, Benny Andrews, and Thornton Wilder. Today the MacDowell Colony continues as a vital thriving artists’ colony. A special installation within the American Treasures gallery, this exhibition, drawn from collections across the Library, provides an opportunity to appreciate the MacDowell experience, from its most recent fellows to its earliest colonists.
