Welcome to Screening Shakespeare! During the next four months (April 20-August 31), as part of the citywide celebration of everything Shakespeare, the Library of Congress will present an unprecedented series of films and TV shows based or inspired by the Bard's works (for complete list of titles see Shakespeare Screenings in the Pickford Theater). From the early silent images of three men in kilts re-enacting a scene from ‘Macbeth’ to Kenneth Brannagh's sumptuous four-hour Hamlet, the program will showcase the full breath of Shakespearean screen adaptations of the past one hundred years. Included are classics with Olivier, Welles and Burton, Maurice Evans's legendary Hallmark Hall of Fame performances and other broadcasts from the golden age of live television, superb BBC adaptations, even Shakespeare-inspired animated films and sitcoms.......More

[USA] The Library of Congress - Capturing Recorded Sound through Imaging: The I.R.E.N.E. Project and Future Prospects

Four years ago, the Preservation Directorate initiated collaboration with Dr. Carl H. Haber to capture sound from damaged phonographs, and similar 2 D grooved recordings, by developing a device to image groove configurations. The prototype device, the "I.R.E.N.E. Machine," has now been delivered and installed at LC for fidelity evaluation by two Library Divisions: Preservation Research and Testing, and Motion Picture, Broadcast and Recorded Sound. Dr. Haber will discuss the status of the I.R.E.N.E. project, as well as future plans to develop a second device for high resolution surface profiling of 3 D grooved media, such as wax cylinders.
