Digital Education Institute, Institute for Information Industry/Lan Yung-hsiao, Deputy Engineer

The Union Catalog of Digital Archives, the Asia’s largest Chinese cultural material bank can be searched in the Learning Object Repository in Taiwanhttp://www.lort.org.tw. The objective of linking the two is to integrate Taiwan’s cultural material and teaching material resources, so that more users can search easily with what they want.

The Union Catalog is a material repository the created under the Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program the main objective of which is to allow the public to search the “national digital archives” and expect them to be the best resource supply platform for educational, research and industrial application. The Union Catalog are divided into 12 categories including “calligraphy”, “Ceremonies of Taiwan’s aborigines” and “Living things” (for more details please refer to Union Catalog).

With regards to Chinese cultural resources, the author, and many other people, have a deep impression of the Song Dynasty painting “Along the River During the Ch'ing-ming Festival” from their junior high school or high school days. However, the small size of the text books made it difficult to appreciate the painting in full. The painting, by Chang Ze-duan of the Northern Song, based on the Grave Sweeping Festival (Ch'ing-ming Festival) as its subject and depicts the market scenes and customs on the banks of the Bian River in Bianjing. In the Union Catalog, a high quality digital reproduction of the painting has been made, in other words, anyone feeling nostalgic can understand the painting by reading the explanation of its story and looking at the fine pictures. Through the network, teachers can also apply this digital teaching mediumlecture to allow students to understand the customs of the time.
