The market for e-book products has grown rapidly in recent years. According to the market research firm DIGITIMES Research, global sales of e-book readers exceeded 1.2 million units in the first quarter of 2010, and the total sales figure for 2010 is forecast to reach 9.3 million units, possibly breaking the 10 million unit threshold.E-book products’ gradually coming into line with the functional and usability requirements of consumers, as well as the enrichment of the content needed by the e-book industry by the entry of more content providers, have spurred rapid development in the industry. The entry of new brands and the demand of the emerging market have both been key factors in promoting the substantial growth of the e-book industry, resulting in numerous major IT firms investing in the development of e-book readers, and fierce industry competition.
Yet within the field of the e-book industry, Taiwanese firms have successfully seized the advantage, effectively integrating the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments of the industry chain to become the core of the global e-book supply chain, with key technologies all in the hands of Taiwanese firms, including the primary suppliers of electronic paper, E-Ink and SiPix. Taiwanese firms have also actively developed their abilities in R&D, design, and production, in the e-book industry, with the primary goal of becoming a major development center for the global e-book industry.
In order to assist Taiwanese manufacturers in grasping core advantages and industry, the e-Reading Pavillion, organized under the International Marketing and Promotion sub-item of TELDAP, successfully brought together Acer, Delta Electronics, ASUSTek, BenQ, Kinpo Electronics, Inventec, Qisda, AIPTEK, Netronix, and other well-known ICT manufacturers in their first joint exhibition at this year’s COMPUTEX show. Areas on four major subjects were also planned for the pavilion: The Taiwan E-Reader Industry Chain, which exhibited color electronic paper, key components, and e-readers; the Taiwan E-Reader Zone, displaying the precise manufacturing capabilities of the Taiwanese IT industry; E-Book Demonstration Zone, which demonstrated the integration of the hardware and software of the Taiwanese e-reader industry, incorporating the strengths of firms in digital publishing, content, and platforms in a display of the Taiwanese model;and The Smart Classroom, which combined e-learning software and hardware firms such as Island Technology, Idealist Information Co., AVerMedia, Studio Classroom, , Hamastar, L Labs, IQChinese, and LiveABC to exhibit many applications for the smart classroom, with products including electronic whiteboards, all-in-one computers, digital handwriting tablets, document cameras, and more.
The e-Reading Pavilion at COMPUTEX Taipei 2010 drew attention from all quarters, and the firms participating in the exhibition made every effort to use the advantage of the pavilion to successfully announcing their important role in the e-book industry, with the competition between the many firms generating topics for prominent reports from major media outlets such as the United Daily News (udn.com), the Central News Agency, Apple Daily, Central Daily News, Unique Broadcasting, and China Television. The exhibition also drew numerous international buyers to inquire about opportunities for cooperation, such as OEM/ODM, technology transfers, content/platform cooperation, and foreign distribution rights; exhibiting firms also successfully opened up possibilities for cooperation across fields, such as in SI manufacturing, games, kindergartens, cartoons, and other areas. The prominent exhibitions by the firms at the e-Reading Pavilion successfully opened up international markets, created limitless business opportunities, and reaffirmed the important status of the Taiwanese e-book industry in the international mark
