New Archaeological Research at Valley Forge

Recent excavations conducted by the National Park Service (1999-2002) and Temple University (2007) in the brigade encampment areas of Valley Forge have shed new light on the 1777-1778 winter camp for the Continental Army. The new research has shown that the area was alive with activity and the army was being drilled in anticipation of the spring campaigns. Not only hut sites and associated trash pits were unearthed but more singular sites such as camp kitchens, exterior fireplaces, cooking areas, smithing locations, and other work areas were also explored.......More
